Frances Fergusson: Community Works

Community Works

In 2001, when the United Way of Dutchess County accepted the decision of the Boy Scouts of America, one of its member agencies, to retain its legal right to discriminate based on sexual orientation, Vassar, led by President Frances Fergusson, decided to pull out of the United Way campaign and set up its own philanthropic campaign, Community Works, with 100% of the funds raised going to support local organizations and agencies. In its first year, Community Works raised $70,000 from the Vassar community, including students. In 2004, Vassar raised a record $88,500, with students contributing nearly $16,000 - clear proof that community does indeed work, and perhaps works even better when its members take a stand on their beliefs.
