Matthew Vassar: Artful Impact

Artful Impact

Believing that art should stand "boldly forth as an educational force," Matthew Vassar purchased the private collection and art library of the Rev. Elias Lyman Magoon, including 40 small landscape paintings by Hudson River School artists, as his founding gift to the college. Vassar thus became the first college to open with an art museum among its facilities. Vassar's is one of the oldest museums in the U.S., predating such institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
