Let Them Eat Veggies

Now, virtually every major supermarket has an organic foods section and sells at least some whole foods. But in 1991, when Mark Ordan '79 cofounded Fresh Fields, a Maryland-based natural foods supermarket chain, he was way ahead of the curve, and right on the money. In five years, Fresh Fields burgeoned into a 22-store chain serving four major metropolitan areas with $300 million in annual sales. Fresh Fields received both national and local acclaim and was named Money magazine's 1993 Store of the Year.
